Level Crossings were commonplace, particularly in towns and across such areas as the Fenland of Eastern England.
Gates were often opened by hand, but some were operated by a hand wheel alongside the crossing.
A few are still in use today, usually on branch lines and in industrial locations. They would normally be left closed to rail traffic, with the crossing being protected by stop signals on either side.
