Built for the Operating Division of the Royal Engineers for war service overseas and were being offered for sale by the Government.
Several were loaned by the GWR during the First World War, they were returned when the war ended in May 1919.
When they passed into British Railways ownership the Class received minor upgrades.
None of the RODs have survived to preservation.
